We arrived in Kota Kinabalu, which is in the north and part of Malaysia. Our short stop in Borneo sadly meant we couldn’t explore much of the island. Being mostly a Muslim region is was great to explore a culture with a different faith and sample some new culinary delights. We stayed in KK for a few days before making another punishing 6 hour bus journey to Sandakan on the north-eastern coast.
Sandakan is home to Sepilok, a Orangutan Rehabilitation center where orphaned young are taken to be re-introduced into the wild. It was amazing to be so up-close with the primate and also shocking being in an area where much of their natural habitat has been destroyed by deforestation and the creation of palm oil plantations. We also took a boat up the Kinabatangan river where we could spot Primates, Birds and even a slumbering Crocodile.
This was the final stop for our amazing adventure so after catching a connecting flight, we made the 14 hour trip back to the UK.
